5@5 is a daily, food-related list from chefs, writers, political pundits, musicians, actors and all manner of opinionated people from around the globe.

You may recognize the above gentleman as Chef Rick Moonen, owner and executive chef of RM Seafood in Las Vegas, author of "Fish Without a Doubt" and more recently, the runner-up on season two of Bravo's "Top Chef Masters."

A vocal advocate for sustainable fishing and seafood, Moonen has a "Big Five Theory" - essentially saying restaurants in the United States typically serve only five groups of fish: tuna, bass, snapper, cod and salmon. Keeping up with this belief, Moonen provides some seafood substitutions in order to give the "Big Five" a break.

5 Fish That Deserve a Break: Rick Moonen

1. Instead of salmon, try Arctic char.
"It’s very similar in taste and texture to salmon – in fact, at RM Seafood, my chefs and I refer to it as salmon light."

2. Instead of tuna, try wild-caught swordfish.
"About ten years ago, I was part of a chefs' movement called 'Give Swordfish a Break.' They were being overfished and the species was dying off. Thanks to these efforts, many chefs did indeed give the fish a break and it’s rebounded - and, when sourced sustainably, it's one of the tastiest fish out there.

3. Instead of cod, try Pacific halibut.
"The meat of these fish is typically firm and flaky and has a sweet taste. The flesh should be white in color, but as with all fish, it shouldn’t be overcooked."

4. Instead of snapper try mackerel.
"Mackerel is a very versatile fish that just tastes great. I love it simply roasted with some lemon juice and fresh herbs."

5. If at a restaurant and the menu says "bass," ask your server what type of bass it is.
"Black bass, striped bass and sea bass (wreckfish) are all O.K. to eat just so long as they were sustainably sourced. If the server doesn’t know then ask to speak with the chef. If the chef doesn’t know, then definitely don’t order the bass. In fact, if the chef doesn’t know where his or her fish is coming from, you might want to simply get up and leave."

Is there someone you'd like to see in the hot seat? Let us know in the comments below, and if we agree, we'll do our best to chase 'em down.

I propose turning vegans into our next sustainable food source. Humans have evolved both flat teeth for grinding plant matter, and sharp incisors for tearing flesh. The reason? We're supposed to eat plants AND other animals. By not eating meat you are depriving your body of necessary nutrients. Eat all the tofu and celery you want, it's no substitute for meat. Any reputable nutritionist will agree. Everything in moderation, people....

I love vegetarians! More of them means more meat for me to eat. I could care less if they want to play Dr. Phil to Ol'Bessie or Porky. That said, I don't like how a majority of them are raised crowded in pens. One day we'll fix that. In the mean time, PASS DA RIBS!!!

One cow feeds dozens of humans but you need dozens of vegetables to feed just one human. So who is destroying more life?

plus humans really don't need to eat as much meat as we do currently. we get by jsut fine with only eating it a few times a week, opposed to everysingle day, mulitple times a day. granted, i am not veggitaian by any means, but my food budget says i had to make a cut some where, so i make smart choices about my meat. I only eat meat about three times a week, and it satisfies the want for meat, while staying within a tight budget.

Let's be real...animals taste hella good. I love eating burgers, chicken wings, steak, filet o fish, sea creatures, land mammals and the like. I love animals they're delicious. Vegetables are delicious too, but you have to eat them with meat.

Everything that tastes good ain't good for you. Think about that when your 65, have cancer or heart disease FROM THE ANIMALS YOU ATE!

    This is good advice.

The best solution to any problem is to prevent said problem from occurring in the first place. Simply put, if we fish and fish and fish until species collapse, we'll not have that dish again in our lifetimes. (outside of F*cking raising the fish in a private aquarium, want to do THAT!?) On the other hand the UN, the EPA, the other conservation groups can put up "Red Flags" and then have competent chefs re-direct the "Human Appetite" to a different dish. And if we are really addicted to something specific, we could just ethically dine by special order and paying a little extra for "Re-fishing" efforts.

Frankly, it's like Foie Gras. In man's "Anytime, anywhere" attitude it's a high suffering and very sick/miserable food. On the other hand, wait till fall and just provide semi-free (wings clipped but can run around) ducks with ample food in addition to their forage options. They'll naturally stuff themselves far stronger than any sadist with a pump would, but expertly so they don't injure themselves. Then when you harvest them their liver will be a tiny bit smaller but SO much richer, like garden vine tomatoes versus big ag industrial hothouse ones. And you won't just have a sick liver in a duck they likely throw away, it'll be a super fat healthy duck, perfect for family holiday feasts, as a package or sold seperately.

Attention Vegans and vegetarians; my food poops on your food.

    July 30, 2010 at 2:24 am |

News for you man, it ain't your food! If we follow your logic though.....
Let's see, your food poops on my food, therefore there is poop on the plant your food eats. Next thing your food eats the plant. Oh dear me, the animal just ate poop!!! You eat the animal. Oh gosh gee, you JUST ATE POOP. GET WITH IT MAN! Go vegan for your health, for the animals and for the planet!

Really, cause I can appreciate people feel the way they do and don't eat meats, fine, But I can guarantee that if that He or She was out in the woods lost and wondering,,,and he was starving and he came across a deer that he or she could possibly kill and have for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a day or two, they would be sharping their spike, because if the deer was actually a Bear,Lion,Tiger etc.. and while my He or She wasn't looking that ETC... would tear them up and eat them and spit out their bones out, and I wouldn't blame it....cause eating nothing but berries and leaves or maybe a piece of fish now and then sucks, and that Bear or tiger or lion, or knows that...

    July 30, 2010 at 1:37 am |
    • Mark

Well if there is a deer, it means that there is sufficient vegetation around to support that deer. Well then we can eat what the deer eats. What would YOU do if there was no more animal products to eat? You should read up on your HUMAN HISTORY because HUMANS used to eat NOTHING but plants, no problem! I live in Korea. A hundred years ago, Koreans ate virtually NOTHING BUT plants, no problem. Now they are eating huge amounts of meats, dairy products, and eggs, and their life expectancy is going DOWN! That's right, when a country gets richer and eats more animal products, cancer, heart disease, etc GO UP and people DIE SOONER on average.

      July 30, 2010 at 1:45 am |
      • jessica

if we had a chambered stomach like that cows, or other wildlife, we could eat what the deer eat, however, i digestive track are simply not stronge enough to withstand such roughage.

The Top 3 choices are hard to find if you are located outside of Manhattan. On top of that, paying a premium for the quality is a burden as well if you have a family of 5. Good products are hard to find once you leave the city, especially in most parts of the bronx, queens and brooklyn. This article is speaking to who? The 30 yr old that has a disposable income?

The problem with this article is that the author keeps referring to this concept "sustainably sourced", as if, given the exponentially rising human population and its food requirements, we could somehow not drive all these species to extinction.

That is a very interesting comment, and it comes at a very interesting time. Steve is a funny guy and sadly I feel like some of this message board shows just how dumb people have become over time. There is nothing wrong with eating what the earth naturally provides for you. Animals eat grass or other animals that eat the grass. Then we eat said animals. Then we die, are buried, and end up returning our nutrients to the earth, which in turn helps grow the grass animals eat. As long as I'm putting back into the system, I'm taking advantage of it.

If I should die before I wake, all my bone and sinew take, toss me in the compost pile and decompose me for a while. And all I am will feed the trees and little fishies in the seas. And next when radishes you munch, you may be having me for lunch, and then excrete me with a grin, chortling "There goes Lee again."

On this planet most creatures that lap their water eat meat as it should be. Creatures that surp their water as we do do not eat meat . We may be doing it wrong at this point in our evolution.

What about sole fish...every eat petrole sole...overfished because it's so very good. I was in the seafood business for several years. Our seafood resources have been overfished by other countries fishing illegally too close to our American shores. Some American fishermen and American fish companies actually assist these other countries like Russia, etc. and making a lot of money selling our resources. We are overfished and that's why prices are so high. Fish has a lot of protein and so does meat. Enjoy it as life is too short as it is.

Actually there's 4 fish, less expensive and even better for you: sardines, herring, anchovies, & mackerel. All 4 are wild caught, filled with valuable oils, and safe as they are at the beginning of the food chain. They are also cheap.

Steve, you're hilarious! I find it even more hilarious that there's enough people who think you're serious about some of your statements. people are funny.

I'm almost a vegan simply because I've educated myself on the crap that animals are fed and how we then consume it when we eat them. pretty nasty stuff. I'm also trying to avoid cancer, heart dieases, diabetes, etc as much as I possibly can. Eating animals/fish/milk increases these chances. Humans on plant based diets are much more healthy. Simply check out some research. I realize that this doesn't matter to many, but matters to me. I've got lots of reasons i want to be alive for some time. My kids for starters. And if you're interested in learning more read some research based material such as The China Study for starters. Knowledge is power. Don't be ignorant enough to do things simply because, "it's the way it's always been". You might just save your life. or someone you love.

    July 29, 2010 at 9:01 pm |
    • Xanthoula

That's why I love being in Greece. It is not just the animals that are fed all kinds of crap that's bad for you – the vegetables and fruit in this country are full of chemicals that contaminate them as well. I prefer the Greek diet. Lots of fruits and veggies, yogurt every day, some carbs, and meat as more of a side dish than the main meal. They eat meat or fish nearly every day, but not as much as we do in the US. And the most important part? Everything is organic. Everything is picked when it is ripe. Oh, and lots of olive oil, also good for you.

  36. Eat Mackeral

I research different fish, especially for their mercury content, and found that a pound of Mackeral at The 99 Cents Stores (for 99.9999 cents, of course!) is the LOWEST in mercury, as it comes from Thailand. I researched sources of Mackeral on various Centers for Disease Control (US Govt CDC) and other reputable sources and found that Thailand's mackeral is lower than Pacific, American and all others.

Try it – comes in a spicy red sauce and has FIVE single-portion servings, already cooked and ready to eat, heat, or put in a sandwich or roll-up tortilla, or chopped over salad greens. Delicious! Nutritious! Almost no fat, no added salt, nearly 100% protein. Cool !

DUDE WHY DO YOU WANT TO PUT ANY AT ALL MERCURY IN YOUR BODY?

Steve is the only one commenting here with any sense, and you fools are too dumb too realize that he's pulling your collective leg with his comments. Dan K calls the author a "douche" for being concerned with overfishing of certain species of fish. I guess you haven't read the statistics that lots of fish are becoming endangered species due to overfishing, including many species of tuna and salmon. If you want fish to be around for us to eat then overfishing is a very serious problem, but I guess being concerned about sustainable fishing is too "douchey" for you.

    • Kelly

I think everybody got sidetracked by Steve's hilarious comment. Calm down people... he's taking you for a ride and honestly, it's pretty funny to watch.

Meanwhile, living on Vancouver Island has certain advantages, not the least of which is relatively less expensive halibut. I can also go down to the docks and get dungeoness crabs caught that very day, still kicking. Do I worry about bringing them home and killing them for dinner? Nope. Have I killed other animals for dinner too? Yep. Does that make me evil or just a hungry guy? I'd say the latter. I don't glory in killing those animals, I glory in giving thanks for a well-prepared meal with little or no waste at all.

Humans have two types of teeth... the kind for tearing off chunks of meat and vegetables and the kind for chewing meat and vegetables. That's why we're omnivores. Our entire biology is designed to eat all types of food. It makes you healthy, not horrible. It's been that way since before we discovered fire. I'm not one to argue with evolution.

I guess that makes me a level 5 omnivore. I'll eat anything that casts a shadow, including level 5 vegans.

Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.

I don't think the writer of the article intended to spark a debate between meat-eaters and vegetarian's. It is referring to self imposed wildlife management. Game management is necessary to keep a balance between over and under abundance. People are going to eat meat , like it or not. Fish will be caught and ate , like or not. For those that do, please help keep that delicate balance and enjoy your favorite fish. :O) (BTW- in my state,if you sell black bass you could end up in jail )

The article above does state that instead of the overly-advertised seafood we all know and love, give other types of fish a chance as well. Since the majority of restaurants love to serve the 'typical' classes of fish (i.e., salmon), a new sort should be fed to the masses. And it's true, variety is the spice of life. Anything cooked properly will be enjoyed just as much.

I think the problem is more along the lines of "Wait, you worked to save them only to recommend we eat them?" Granted, that was the basic plot of the rejected first draft of "Schindler's List," but still....

Enjoy your tofurkey and veggieburgers. I'm going to go grill this swordfish steak along with some roasted red potatoes and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Here's to being at the top of the food chain. Cheers.

Actually, a good pinot noir might work better with swordfis, but nonetheless, I approve your elevated status :)

You know what they like to snack on in Korea? LIVE BABY OCTOPUS. Seriously, I've seen them do it. They put it on a skewer while it's still alive, tentacles flailing, then munch on it like a lollipop. Some just eat it all in one bite.

    July 29, 2010 at 7:18 pm |
    • Anonymous

Um, the octopus isn't live. They cut up the octopus, and since their nervous systems are extremely primitive, their tentacles continue moving for several minutes before they realize they're dead.

      July 29, 2010 at 7:36 pm |
      • Jesse

I think Anonymous is right, as far as I know, usually the dish arrived after the head and internal organs had been removed (fish/octopus,etc).....Explain to me how can the octopus live without the brain and organ? Well, it can't. It's already DEAD.
Octopuses have a fairly unusual autonomic nervous system, with many neurons present in the tentacles rather than the brain. The movement in the tentacles you see are reflexes, not an indication that the octopus is alive.
I mean...Don't be a hyprocrit. This is no different then boiling lobster/crabs when they are alive or eating live oysters.

        July 29, 2010 at 9:27 pm |
      • Lydia

I don't know if it's Korea, but in some part of Asia or another, they do eat whole, live octopus. I saw it in a food documentary ages ago. It's actually pretty dangerous to do, since the octopus doesn't particularly want to be eaten, and people have died from it because the animal grabbed onto their windpipe and/or esophagus and wouldn't let go.

I take my food pre-dead, personally.

        July 30, 2010 at 2:56 am |
      • Kevin

Actually, they do eat it live. (I've had it, so I should know...quite good actually)
At some restaurants they bring a tank around to your table on a cart so you get to choose the ones you want....it then goes straight from the tank to your bowl.

ok, you know what woudl really give the animal kingdom a break and save the planet, people need to quit haveing so many kids. It is because the earth is over populated that our resorces are strained and we have a problem with over fishing, feed lot run off, and pesticides in our water supply. With as many options as there are for birth control, not all of them chemical, pills or surgury, for those going to argue that, there is really no need to have more then one, maybe two children. And yes, humans have teeth that designate us as omnivors, we are oportunistic feeders.

So what happens to my omega-3 intake when I wave the salmon goodbye? We've got salmon, albacore tuna, sardines and mackerel to choose from. And you've just suggested scraping salmon from my diet.

Is your brother a heart surgeon or what?

    July 29, 2010 at 6:53 pm |

Sorry, but I'm far too kind and empathetic to consider killing any living thing just to eat it. I eat only fruits and vegetables that have fallen off the tree/vine and so are no longer a part of the living plant. You people are all savages.

      July 29, 2010 at 7:12 pm |
      • Alan

Steve... You are a pathetic moron... Go find yourself a fruIt tree and eat it's fallen friut...

      • Xanthoula

Again, sarcasm. It is so much fun to watch you all hyperventilating over Steve's comments. This one, about fruit that has fallen from the tree, was used in the film Notting Hill.

        July 29, 2010 at 11:31 pm |
      • Thanatos

Yes, I am a savage and damn proud of it.....does that make you pee your little girl shorts just a little? And I don't rely on a processing plant to kill what I eat – I'm fully capable of and have done it many times in the past. I prefer it over the processing plants.
BTW, I live in an area that grows a large amount of your soy beans. If you had any idea just what they spray on your precious food all the time you'd probably go belly up from the shock of it....not to mention the amount of diesel used to plant, irrigate and harvest it. You people keep on thinking about how good you're making it it for the planet – if that's what helps you sleep well at night. As for me, I sleep fine......lol

Seriously, maybe rather than criticizing carnivores, and writing asinine comments, you might want to step outside once in while or at least watch National Geographic. Bears eat salmon, Seals eat penguins (you know even the cute ones from the movie), the Praying Mantis eats its mate. Lion, Tigers, Whale all are are carnivores, and so on...

I'm not a mercury hater. I just think it's a totally overrated planet and liquid metal. Venus is a far superior planet, and it shares a name with the venus mons, so that's pretty awesome.

"Name one animal in the wild that eats meat. I can't think of one. Why are we humans the only species that eats other animals? Because we're cruel, inhumane, and not empathetic."

Dude, Steve, you can't think of one animal in the wild that eats meat. How about Lions, or Tigers. Better yet, I've lived on a ranch my entire life and raised lamb. I have to deal with coyotes that eat "meat" every week. How about sharks, alligators, or large snakes. Oh, and there certain types of primates that eat fish. Last time I checked human beings have evolved to be omnivores, that means we eat everything.

    July 29, 2010 at 6:48 pm |

Exactly! I told him to educate himself or at least watch shows like national geographic, discovery, animal planet. But he would rather be ignorant.

      July 29, 2010 at 8:30 pm |
      • Thor

Or maybe...you could read all of Steve's comments and understand that he is joking instead of telling him to watch animal planet. If he can comment on Cnn.com then I'm sure he understands the concept of a food chain.

The best solution may be Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal".....

Don't ask to speak with the chef. If the chef has time to come out and talk to you personally, you're probably not in a very popular restaurant, unless it's extremely high-end fine dining. And I'm sick of online advice like this that assumes you're at a 5-star restaurant whenever you go out. Servers are perfectly capable of finding an answer to your question from the appropriate person and coming back to you, or you could talk to a manager.

    July 29, 2010 at 6:45 pm |

      July 29, 2010 at 11:48 pm |
      • Raven

If we weren't meant to eat meat, we wouldn't have the teeth we do. We are omnivores, we eat both meat and vegetables. And if we weren't meant to eat meat, then it shouldn't be so dang tasty on the BBQ.

        July 30, 2010 at 12:17 am |
      • Lydia

I wouldn't survive more than a week on a vegan diet, so please don't apply a one-size-fits-all philosophy to your personal lifestyle choice. Also, all the research I've been reading lately states that veganism and vegetarianism are NOT benefiting the planet, so please research your philosophy before you start pushing it on others or stating it as fact. You've found a system that works for you, and I'm happy for you, but not everyone can or should adopt a vegetarian lifestyle, let alone vegan.

        July 30, 2010 at 2:51 am |
      • Mark

Why do you think your biology is different than any other human on this planet? If one human can go vegan, then all can. We're the SAME SPECIES!

Nice advice, if you can afford or find it. Pacific halibut is fantastic, and my favorite fish. But tried buying any lately? Restrictions on harvesting it have made it virtually unavailable, and a bargain at around $20 per pound. Makes cod look like a bargain. On the other hand, the best bargain around, and the second tastiest fish is trout. Even the farm raised stuff is pretty good.

    July 29, 2010 at 6:40 pm |

Honestly, I was ignoring the Pacific anything, as I'm on the eastern seaboard, hence I get Atlantic fish.

I must ask if anyone posting here knows much about biology and the cycle of life. While I sometimes don't see an issue with survival of the fittest, it other times seems harsh (we are the only species to avoid this natural law, expect for animals in containment) Dan, i get the comedy as with most of the comments here, and i get it and laughed, but bacteria replicate at a speed that makes it extremely difficult kill off (the reason many diseases are difficult to fight off). When it comes to plants versus animals, the life cycle is much quicker (we can produce large amounts with minimal impact), unlike animals. Now, i'm no carnivore, I love my meats. But lets face it, most of us do consume more than our quota. Lastly the fish. I don't think eatting fish is bad at all, the problem I do have is that now that many of the breeding grounds fish thrived in and from have been destroyed by commercial trowling (aweful) the supplies are rapidly declinign while we still consume the same quantities if not more. Sustainability is the key, purchase fish from local vendors, and not from large scale markets, it won't be available if it keeps up! -ponder it

        July 30, 2010 at 9:42 am |
      • Thane

Talking to plants may make them grow as a result of you breathing CO2 on it and even then you would have to do it all day. It has nothing to do with feelings

Well, I am guessing you are a vegetarian, and I don't want you to think that I am against vegetarians, or anything, but I really don't think it is inhumane or cruel to eat meat because that's just the way life works. Ever heard of the food chain? Well, in case you didn't know eating meat (other animals) is definitely part of it.

      July 29, 2010 at 6:35 pm |

@Steve, I think you're being facetious...but in case you're not I'll name a few organisms that eat others. Cats, hyenas, mongoose, wolves, foxes, ferrets, dolphins, whales, snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, sharks, alligators....

        July 29, 2010 at 6:51 pm |
      • burthealey

@ Steve, I can think of several off the top of my head; Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Eagles, Hawks, Sharks, Snakes... Plenty of animals eat meat in the wild. Come on, this is grade school biology here.

        July 29, 2010 at 6:53 pm |
      • kmcg

Name one animal in the wild that eats meat? How about a few.... lions, tigers, house cats, dogs, hyenas, vultures, crocodiles, dolphins... etc. Human jaws and teeth evolved to have an omnivores diet, that's why we have molars for chewing plants and canines for tearing meat.

And the BEST meat is the kind you know where it comes from and has grown in the wild. Fish, deer, elk, etc. I'd take that meat over creepy store-bred for eating meat. THEN you appreciate the sacrifice of that animal for your well-being.

And life is survival of the fittest.

Human is the only species that eats other animals? Look up the term "Carnivores"..Mmm such as Wolves? Lions? Tigers? Seals? Penguins? Dogs? Cats, Dolphins, crocodiles? There are carnivorous plants like Venus flytrap too.

Eating meat is not inhumane or not empathetic.
For you not eating meat is not kind or smart or empathetic. It's ignorant and foolish. Ever heard of ecosystem and food web? Educate yourself....take some biology classes or at least tune into national geographic, animal planet, discovery channel.
Oh, if you have children, they would be able to tell you that many species of dinosaures are carnivores.

well, I hope that you have feelings for mosquito, other insects when they bite you. They need to survive too.
Make sure that you will lecture the bears, wild cats in the wild when you come across them while you go camping. Like they should know that it's cruel and inhumane to attack humans.

The point is we are annihilating everything; all life forms including our planet. Soon we’ll be eating each other out of necessity. With 7 billon people and growing soon life will be unsustainable. Is that the world you want to live in? You’re right; I am a vegetarian as long as we have decent soil to grow food. Unfortunately, our soil future isn’t looking so bright along with a long list of other issues.

      July 29, 2010 at 6:42 pm |
      • Steve

Really, our only option is population control and forced execution. People should only be allowed to have 1 child, and no one should be allowed to live past 40. That way our population will be reduced significantly, without the added burden of having to support the elderly.

        July 29, 2010 at 6:47 pm |
      • amanda

I can guarantee you that eating meat is not the sole cause of Earth's destruction. In fact, of all the things we do, it probably contributes the least.

        July 29, 2010 at 7:42 pm |
      • Sweetenedtea

That's just silly, Steve. Killing people after they hit 40 means we're losing a vast wealth of experience and skills available to help our society. Instead, we should kill people before they hit 20...then we're only losing a bunch of obnoxious kids who (quite wrongly) think they know everything.

        Seriously, think these things through...

For those of you not around in the '80's this classic tale of so-called "advanced" civilization, that had exhausted its ecosystem and all food sources, resorted to factory-produced "Soylent Green" - Hmmm, where did all those over-30's has-beens "disappear" to in the night? Hmmmm

      • Flamespeak

Plants are alive just as much as animals. Simply because something doesn't scream when cut, does not mean you are not killing or maiming a living being. I don't say this to vegans to try and belittle them or anything, but I just want them to realize thier choice to eat only plants is just as destructive to life as those that eat meat in thier diets. Still, vegan diets can be quite healthy for the human body, so that is a plus.

Now I want some steamed tilapia with summer squash and nice pot of jasmine green tea. I don't know why this chef recommened all of this other fish in his article though, because it isn't easily obtainable for most folks in my neck of the woods.

Bob, I agree. I think all humans should just eat humans in the end. We should not dare to think about eating other species because we don't understand where they are coming from. We just understand each other, so lets just eat each other. Plants, water, fruit and veggies all have feelings too. They are all alive. We should abstain from eating everything but our own. We abuse "food" way too much. Please join me in an eternal fast; it will last 5 days and then...well...we die.

I think the issue of survival not only for us, but future generations deserves more than your sarcastic attitude. I’m sure you’re plan is to wait and see what happens? Wouldn’t want to be you!

        July 29, 2010 at 6:56 pm |
      • Michael

Mr. Joe Johnson. Let me explain in detail. I think America and their fast food chains are absolutely horrendous, and I'm not being sarcastic when I say that. McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell etc etc. have disgraced animals and have changed nature without a doubt and should be shut down with out a doubt. However, to say that it's inhumane to eat a piece of fish for dinner is, well, a joke. If these things are done in moderation it is part of nature and should be encouraged. There is a difference here, and saying its inhumane to eat a fish is a very general and uneducated statement.

        July 29, 2010 at 7:06 pm |
      • Joe Johnson

Your responses don't scream educated from where I'm sitting, but I do agree that moderation is a start to our worlds issues.

        July 29, 2010 at 7:22 pm |
      • Reallyyy??

"Plants, water, fruit and veggies all have feelings too. They are all alive."

Okay, just because cells divide when there is enough nutrients present does not mean they have feelings. There are no nerve endings plants cannot feel pain nor feelings. This is quite basic. Also water is clearly not even alive. How can you even write that? Oxygen and Hydrogen are simply chemicals not living creatures.

        July 29, 2010 at 7:52 pm |
      • Rick

Plants do not have feelings, but animals do? I would ask you to provide empirical data that could support that argument. You make the claim that nerve endings are necessary for feelings, however I would suggest that this is not the case. For sensations yes, but for what you refer to feelings as (emotional responses) there is more to it than nerve endings. This of course is not surprising to me, as there are enough idiots out there that believe language is something that many life forms have, which scientifically speaking the only species that has the capability of language is Homo sapien. You can argue that other animals have the capability to communicate, and you would be correct. The ability to communicate is not the same as language.

Mind you, I am not against vegans, of course I am also not against the consumption of meat. I agree with the concept that moderation is necessary, and the reality is that meat should be a relatively small portion of a diet that does mostly consist of plant materials. This is, unfortunately, a concept that is not really understood or accepted in many places, and is often times grossly ignored in the United States.

As you can see by my screen name, I'm a cow and now that I've been enlightened by your comments I vow to never eat grass again. Just thinking of all those years of feeding on Bahaia grass (and I swear I had no idea they had FEELINGS) leaves me feeling, well, empty inside. I hang my head in shame thinking of all the grass I've consumed, trampled on and even (horror) pooped on!!! NOOOOOOOMOOOOre. For restitution I am currently standing on one hoof in order to lessen my carbon footprint.

Humans need 20 amino acids to survive. 3 of them can only be found in meat. Not tofu, meat.

Can't wait for studies showing vegans dying at 65 from accelerated aging due to protein deficiency.

I say eat all the fish you can. To eat only plants is folly. Not eating a fish because it is alive is a hypocritical. Plants are living beings to. Advocating for vegetarianism is nothing more than advocating for the genocide of the plant kingdom.

calling me immoral for living the way my ancestors have been for thousands of generations is just as bad as hating an entire race of people over some cultural difference.

just because you think you are "eco friendly" doesnt stop you from being ignorant.

i was born an omnivore and i will stay an omnivore. if you choose to rob your body of key nutrients that is totally your choice which i could care less aobut.

I'm eating meat, so all you panty waste veg nibblers can give the propaganda a rest already! Don't care what your lifestyle is, don't want to know about it and am tired of hearing you bitch and moan! I wouldn't hold being vegetarian or vegan against anyone if not for the militant twits who wish to force their lifestyles on all of us. Fact is that I don't give a damn about the "poor" animals.....they are food, not my equal. If veggie food is so damn great, then why do they always try to make it taste like meat? Get real!

Given the choice of being cruel or eating vegetarian (shudder!)... I'll be cruel.
Besides, have you ever actually worked on a farm? Even a "organic" one causes thousands of "deaths" by tilling the soil – (what, do you actually think a mole, fieldmouse or groundhog is going to outrun a tractor? No..it's going to try to hide in its little burrow and will become "fertilizer"!)
Not eating meat for health reasons is one thing, but doing it because you "dont want animals to die" simply means you are clueless about where your food actually comes from.

How about the choice to not be cruel, but instead to be kind and also to eat meat? That's also a choice, isn't it?
