CNN cameraman Jeremy Harlan, a noted produce fiend, was minding his own business, just a-strolling through a Watsonville, California farmers' market when these here strawberries just decided to get all up in his face. Berried him alive, you might say. Or you mightn't. You might just buy a few pints and down 'em in one sitting.

Oh, and here's why they're especially abundant in Santa Cruz and Monterey. From the Monterey Bay Strawberry Festival website:

The offshore breezes from California's Western ocean exposure provide year-round mild temperatures and an ideal climate for growing strawberries. This coastal climate makes the Monterey/Santa Cruz county area among the best places in the world to grow strawberries.

Now doesn't that just take the (strawberry short) cake?

Each weekday, Lick the Screen will showcase a food photo that sets our stomach rumbling. If you'd like your work to be featured, submit your pictures to the Eatocracy Flickr pool or leave a link in the comments. We'll get in touch if what we see makes us weak at the knees.
